Journalists' Syndicate Condemns Assault on Al-Mahriyah Correspondent in Mukalla
The Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate condemned the assault on colleagues Zakaria Mohammed, an Al-Mahriyah channel correspondent, and Moataz Al-Naqeeb, a Yemen Shabab channel correspondent, on Saturday evening. The attack occurred while they were performing their journalistic duty covering events for the anniversary of the September 26th Revolution in the city of Mukalla, Hadramout governorate.
The Syndicate noted that Zakaria Mohammed and Moataz Al-Naqeeb were verbally and physically assaulted by four individuals because they were covering and filming the event's proceedings. This prevented them from continuing their journalistic work, and their camera equipment was also destroyed.
The Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate called on the competent authorities in Hadramout governorate to open an urgent and transparent investigation into the incident, identify and hold the assailants accountable, and ensure they do not escape punishment. It also demands that protection be provided to the two colleagues, enabling them to practice their journalistic work freely and safely.
The Syndicate affirmed that assaulting journalists while they are performing their professional duties and preventing them from reporting and filming constitutes a violation of press freedom and the right of journalists to report and cover events. It calls on the concerned authorities to take measures to ensure such attacks are not repeated.
