Iranian Defense Minister Threatens US with Severe Damage
Iranian Defense Minister Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi has threatened to inflict "severe damage" on the United States and its "allies in the Middle East" if it resumes its military campaign against his country.
The Iranian minister told reporters after winning the parliament's confidence: "People can be assured that 'the Americans will probably not dare to attack us, but if they do, they themselves and the region will suffer severe damage'."
The Iranian parliament, in a virtual session on Sunday, approved the appointment of Ketabchi as Minister of Defense, according to official media, ending a temporary administration of the ministry that lasted about eight months after the death of his predecessor, Aziz Nasirzadeh, in the US-Israeli war on February 28.
Akhlaghi received 237 votes in favor versus 15 against, with no recorded abstentions, out of 277 deputies attending the session, according to Iran's "Mehr" agency.
