Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari declared a state of emergency on Sunday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and dissolved the local government led by the party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Zardari approved a government recommendation to declare a state of emergency in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwestern Pakistan, according to a decree distributed to local media.

In an extraordinary meeting held Sunday morning, the government reviewed the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, particularly what was described as the local government's indifference towards combating "terrorism".

The government recommended that the president declare a state of emergency based on his constitutional powers and in accordance with the laws followed in Pakistan.

Declaring a state of emergency in the Khyber region means the federal government in the capital, Islamabad, will take over executive authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The local parliament in the province will also be suspended for at least two months, according to media reports.

The "Tehreek-e-Insaf" party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has continuously controlled the local government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province for 13 years.
