UN Warns of Continued Displacement in Yemen
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that tens of thousands of people may be forced to flee their homes in Yemen due to escalating fighting that has already displaced more than 130,000 people this month.
UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch said in a press conference in Geneva on Tuesday that the intensification of fighting in Yemen could lead to further mass displacement, and the number of people fleeing is expected to increase, both within Yemen and to Djibouti, Somalia, and other countries.
Baloch added that many mothers reported being displaced for the fourth time since the conflict began more than 12 years ago, expressing hope to return once the fighting stops, "not to their original areas, but to the last place of displacement, which their children consider home".
In the same context, the UNHCR representative in Yemen, Armen Yedegharyan, said that the latest wave of displacement comes amid the country's entrenched mass displacement crisis, where more than 5.2 million people had already been uprooted from their homes by the ongoing war, even before recent events.
Yedegharyan said: "Taiz remains the epicenter of the crisis, accounting for over 60% of all displacements. Many families remain within the same governorate, unable to move to safer places due to fighting, road blockages, or a lack of transportation and fuel. Displacements are also being reported from the governorates of Al-Jawf, Marib, and Al-Hudaydah, reflecting the expanding and multi-front nature of the conflict".
