Security Studies Professor: Houthi Escalation Affects Regional Security
Dr. Bakil Al-Zindani, a professor of security studies, said that the Houthi group is moving towards expanding the circle of conflict in Yemen, in parallel with a military escalation on several fronts.
In a statement to the "Mawaqif" program on "Al-Mahriah" channel, Al-Zindani explained that the city of Taiz witnessed violent explosions amidst reports of it being shelled with ballistic missiles launched by the Houthi group, suggesting this could be linked to the group's inability to make progress on the fronts it is trying to penetrate in Lahij and other areas.
He added that the expansion of the conflict in Yemen will have repercussions for the region and will affect de-escalation efforts and endeavors aimed at bridging differences and ending the war.
Al-Zindani noted that the military escalation coincides with statements by the US Secretary of State regarding his country's commitment to defending the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia if the situation evolves, based on the security and military agreements between the two countries.
He also pointed to statements by the British Defence Secretary, who described the Houthi group as a threat to the region's security, considering this a reflection of escalating international stances against the group's activities.
Al-Zindani said that every phase in which there is talk of the need to stop the war and return to the path of peace and de-escalation is met with Houthi escalation, expansion on fronts, and the targeting of civilians.
He pointed to rocket attacks on public markets in Lahij yesterday, stressing that they are civilian areas and do not contain military gatherings, according to his statement.
The security studies professor also spoke about what he described as arms smuggling operations through the ports of Mocha and Hodeidah, coming from Somalia to the battlefronts, in addition to the continuation of flights to Sanaa, criticizing what he considered a lack of clear initiatives from the Houthis to stop the war.
