Al-Qa'qa' Antar was not just a young man practicing adventure; he became a notable phenomenon on social media in recent years, where he used to appear in breathtaking scenes climbing dangerous heights and slopes inside the Haradat Damt volcano crater in Al-Dhale Governorate without any noticeable safety equipment. But one of those adventures has now ended, opening a wide debate about the limits of adventure, poverty, and social responsibility.

Civil defense teams are still continuing the search for the body of the young man, Al-Qa'qa' Antar al-Absi, after he fell into the volcano's crater, amidst significant challenges posed by the rugged nature of the site and the difficulty of reaching the bottom of the crater.

According to the Civil Defense Authority, rescue teams began the search immediately after receiving the report, conducting a field survey of the area around the fall site, before efforts were reinforced with specialized diving and water rescue teams.

In a notable development, local sources reported the arrival of a team from the Civil Defense and Red Crescent from the capital, Sana'a, to participate in the recovery operation, while the descent into the crater's depths was postponed until morning hours due to the significant risks posed by night rescue operations.

"Yemen's Spider-Man"

Over the past few years, Al-Qa'qa' Antar gained widespread fame on social media platforms, where he documented dozens of video clips showing his ability to climb rocky heights and dangerous slopes, especially in the volcanic area of Haradat Damt. Because of his exceptional audacity, many of his followers nicknamed him "Yemen's Spider-Man," referring to his ability to move in places that many find difficult to approach.

However, the recent incident has brought back old questions about the nature of these adventures, the availability of safety conditions, and the limits of responsibility between the content creator and the audience that follows and encourages such scenes.

Between Passion and Recklessness

The incident sparked a widespread wave of reactions on social media, with opinions divided between those who saw Al-Qa'qa' as practicing his passion and providing exceptional content, and those who considered what happened a natural consequence of extremely dangerous adventures.

Journalist Samir Al-Nimri rejected the description of Al-Qa'qa' as "throwing himself into peril," considering that the young man paid a high price for his passion and hobbies, while arguing that those who go to the battlefields are more deserving of such a description.

As for Radwan Al-Munai'i, he linked the incident to difficult living conditions, believing that Al-Qa'qa' was trying to earn a living by performing shows that attract the public, pointing out that society and the authorities did not provide him with adequate protection or establish regulations to prevent the recurrence of such risks.

Was Poverty Part of the Story?

A number of commentators went even further, considering that the incident reflects an aspect of the difficult economic reality that many Yemenis live in.

Nasser Jalboub wrote that "poverty can push a person to embrace danger for a livelihood," considering that Al-Qa'qa's story encapsulates a part of the suffering of Yemenis who sometimes find themselves forced to risk their lives in search of a source of income.

In contrast, others believed that the incident reveals a lack of regulation and oversight in dangerous tourist and natural sites, where extremely risky performances and adventures are carried out without known equipment or safety standards.

Who Bears the Responsibility?

Activist Mustafa Al-Waeel considered that the responsibility does not fall on Al-Qa'qa' alone, but extends to the visitors who paid money to watch those adventures, to the society that encouraged them, and also to the responsible authorities who did not impose clear protection measures at the site.

He pointed out that the simplest mistake in such environments could lead to a tragic end, which is what actually happened inside the volcano's crater.

As for Anwar Al-Awdi, he called for treating the incident as a painful lesson about the importance of safety, stressing that human life remains more precious than any adventure or fame on social platforms.

Haradat Damt is one of the most famous natural and volcanic landmarks in Yemen, attracting visitors and adventurers from various regions. However, its rugged terrain and sharp edges make approaching it fraught with danger, especially in the absence of protection and safety measures.
