UN Official: We Are Deeply Concerned About the Risk of Further Fighting in Yemen
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, expressed deep concern about the risk of further fighting and more harm to Yemen and its people.
Dujarric explained that more than 21,000 families in Yemen have been displaced since August 1, mostly from the governorates of Taiz and Lahij.
He emphasized that any further escalation in Yemen would have increasing repercussions at both the regional and global levels.
The UN official noted that any renewed engagement between the parties, especially Washington and Tehran, would help end the conflict that is causing so much suffering.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) had announced the displacement of at least 129,438 people, or about 21,573 families, in seven Yemeni governorates over the past few weeks, as violence continues to escalate and more families flee in search of safety.
The organization warned of the continuing rise in the number of displaced people, calling on the international community to provide support for the displaced and the host communities that share their scarce resources with them.
Othman Belbeisi, IOM's Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said that many displaced people have had to flee more than once in search of safety.
He added: "The numbers are constantly increasing. On September 18, we registered 118,086 displaced people, and just three days later, this number increased by 11,352 people."
According to the latest data from the organization, Taiz governorate hosts the largest number of displaced people, with 73,494 individuals, followed by the governorates of Lahij, Aden, Al-Hudaydah, Abyan, Hadhramaut, and Ma'rib.
Belbeisi said that these families "have lost their homes and sources of income" and are arriving in areas already suffering from difficult conditions, adding that host communities are sharing their limited resources, but "they cannot do it alone."
The official stressed that the organization needs urgent support for the displaced fleeing violence and for the communities hosting them.
