Reuters: Al-Alimi Sought US Support Against Houthis; Trump Made No Military Commitment
Four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone call on Sunday with the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, during which they discussed the advance of the Iran-aligned Houthis near the Bab al-Mandab strait.
The sources stated that Al-Alimi requested U.S. support for his Saudi-backed government against the Houthis, who seized strategic areas along the strait earlier this month in a swift offensive.
Two sources, one Yemeni and one Western, said that during the call, Trump offered no direct commitment to provide military support.
The White House and the Yemeni government's information minister did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to the agency.
Trump has publicly stated that the United States is in contact with the Houthis, and that the group has announced it will not target American ships. The United States had previously designated the Houthis as a terrorist organization.
Reuters previously reported that Trump had rejected Saudi requests for military support against the Houthis.
