Over 122,000 Yemenis Displaced in First Half of September Due to Escalation
The Executive Unit for IDP Camp Management in Yemen reported on Wednesday evening that more than 122,000 people were displaced from various areas in 8 governorates between September 1 and 15, due to the recent military escalation by the Houthi group.
In a statement reported by the official Yemeni news agency "Saba," the unit said it had monitored the displacement of 17,852 families, comprising 122,297 individuals, during the first half of this month.
Taiz governorate topped the list of governorates with the highest recorded displacements, with 9,562 families comprising 66,972 displaced individuals, followed by Lahj with 4,511 families comprising 31,577 displaced individuals.
Aden also recorded the displacement of 1,180 families (5,555 people), Abyan 1,003 families (7,021 displaced), while Hadhramaut recorded 66 families (462 displaced), Al-Mahra 40 families (280 displaced), and Shabwa 19 families (133 displaced).
The unit explained that the current wave of displacement includes secondary displacement, noting that it had previously monitored the displacement of 1,471 families from the Hays and Al-Khokha districts in Al-Hudaydah governorate, before these families were forced to be displaced again towards Aden.
It added that its teams continue to track the displaced families, identify their arrival locations, re-register them, update their data, and determine their humanitarian needs.
It noted the continued monitoring of displacement from areas of escalation in Taiz governorate, especially the districts of Al-Makha, Al-Wazi'iyah, Mawza, Dhubab, and Maqbanah, amid changing displacement routes and families moving from previous displacement areas to others.
The unit stated that the urgent needs of the displaced include shelter, emergency housing, food, safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, health services, protection, non-food items, and cash assistance.
It called on UN agencies, international and local organizations, donors, and humanitarian partners to urgently mobilize resources and expand their interventions to cover the increasing needs and existing gaps.
