Reuters: China asks Iran to rein in Houthis after Saudi plea
Reuters reported, citing three informed Iranian sources, that China secretly asked Tehran for help in reining in the Houthis after a plea from Saudi Arabia to Beijing following a military attack that resulted in their advance to Bab el-Mandeb.
The sources told the agency that Saudi Arabia turned to China for help after the Houthis' rapid advance along the Red Sea coast and around the Bab el-Mandeb strait, adding that China publicly called for restraint, dialogue, and the restoration of navigation security, but its private message went beyond public comments, according to Reuters.
Last Thursday, the Houthis seized control of the districts of Hays, Al-Khokha, and Mocha on the west coast, which opened the door to discussions about the risks and threats that may face international navigation through Bab el-Mandeb.
