Yemen's UN Envoy: Houthis Turn Energy Corridors into Pressure Tools, Threaten Navigation
Yemen's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, said the Houthi group is working to turn international energy and navigation corridors into tools of pressure, warning that the continued Houthi threat to maritime routes poses a danger that extends beyond Yemen and the region.
In a speech before the Security Council, Al-Saadi said that securing the Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea is the responsibility of the international community, calling for the establishment of an international deterrence system to prevent the Houthis from threatening navigation and global trade.
He called on the Security Council to stop the flow of weapons, capabilities, and expertise to the Houthis, warning that the group's control over Bab el-Mandeb would facilitate the exchange of weapons with terrorist groups and encourage the spread of terrorism in the Horn of Africa.
Al-Saadi stressed that the belief that the Houthi threat will cease on its own is "not realistic," emphasizing the need to address the danger as an ongoing threat to the security of navigation and international waterways.
He said that Bab el-Mandeb is "Yemeni territory, but its security concerns the entire world," affirming that the Yemeni government will continue to work to protect the waterways.
Al-Saadi also called on the international community to stand with Saudi Arabia and its right to defend its security and territory in light of the threats it faces.
Yemen's envoy stressed that confronting the Houthi threat requires a more decisive international stance that prevents the use of maritime routes and energy corridors as tools for pressure and blackmail, and protects the movement of international trade and navigation.
