Red Cross Announces Delivery of Medical Supplies to Taiz Hospitals
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced on Wednesday the delivery of four shipments of essential medical supplies to the city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen, weeks after roads leading to it were blocked due to renewed military confrontations.
The committee said the shipments included surgical kits designed to help hospitals deal with those injured by the military escalation, amid increasing pressure on health facilities and a shortage of medical supplies.
For about a month, the city of Taiz has been in near-total isolation, with continued clashes and the closure of main roads leading to it, including the road connecting it to the city of Aden. This has restricted civilian movement, hindered the arrival of humanitarian aid, and exacerbated food, water, and fuel shortages.
Reuters quoted the ICRC as saying that renewed fighting since last September has increased pressure on the health sector, making the delivery of surgical supplies a vital step to help hospitals continue providing medical care.
The head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen, Kristine Cipolla, said that for the seriously injured and critically ill, receiving timely medical care can be the difference between life and death, regardless of where they live or their location on the front lines.
Cipolla called on the parties to the conflict to continue facilitating safe and sustainable access for humanitarian aid.
