Nearly 100 Settlers Storm Al-Aqsa, Perform Rituals
Nearly 100 Israeli settlers stormed the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday morning, under the protection of Israeli forces, and performed Talmudic rituals and prayers, coinciding with what is known as "Yom Kippur".
The Jerusalem Governorate's media office said in a statement that nearly 100 settlers had stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque courtyards since Sunday morning under the protection of Israeli forces.
It added that the settlers performed Talmudic rituals and prayers in the mosque's courtyards.
It explained that the incursions coincide with what is known as "Yom Kippur," which begins Sunday evening and continues until Monday evening.
The incursion comes a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a number of his ministers, and thousands of settlers stormed the Al-Buraq Wall Plaza in the Old City of East Jerusalem.
Recently, settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque have escalated, especially in conjunction with Jewish holidays, amid Palestinian and Jordanian warnings of attempts to impose a new status quo at the mosque and divide it both temporally and spatially.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that Al-Aqsa Mosque, with its full area of 144 dunams, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf, is the authority responsible for managing the affairs of the compound and regulating entry to it.
