Archaeological Cave in Hajjah Reveals Hundreds of Skeletons and Human Remains from Various Eras

The General Authority for Antiquities and Museums in Sana'a has revealed an archaeological site inside a mountain cave in the village of Jabal Al-Mansoura, Janab Al-Yaman sub-district, Al-Shahel district in Hajjah governorate, containing archaeological finds and hundreds of skeletons and human remains of men, women, and children of different ages.
The Authority stated that the cave, located at the base of the Jabal Al-Mansoura mountain block, exemplifies the importance of mountain caves and grottoes in the Yemeni highlands as sites that have preserved a part of the cultural, civilizational, and archaeological heritage, including drawings and inscriptions through which ancient Yemenis documented aspects of their lives, beliefs, and interests.
It clarified that the remains discovered inside the cave were found in positions suggesting sudden death, opening up possibilities about the circumstances of their demise, whether due to a natural disaster or human conflict, although the initial examination did not determine the cause of death.
The site's discovery came after activists shared information and photos about it on social media platforms, which prompted the Hajjah governorate leadership to direct the relevant authorities to conduct a field inspection of the site, with the participation of the governorate's branch of the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums.
According to the Authority, an archaeological team led by Dr. Hammoud Ghilan reached the cave on June 9, 2021, after an arduous journey of about two kilometers on foot across a steep mountain slope to reach the cave, which had remained isolated for centuries due to its geographical location.
Details of the site and the inspection results were published in the ninth issue of the "Azal" archaeological journal, in an article documenting the importance of the cave and its archaeological remains and artifacts.
