Meeting in Aden Discusses Health Emergency Response Plan

The National Committee for Health Emergency Coordination, chaired by Minister of Public Health and Population Qasim Bahaibah, discussed on Thursday in the interim capital, Aden, the repercussions of the Houthi escalation on the health and humanitarian situation, the health sector's readiness to respond to emergencies, and the challenges facing the continuity of medical services.
The meeting addressed the latest developments in the health and epidemiological situation, the interventions required to enhance the health response for the displaced, and the necessary preparations for implementing the measles immunization campaign, which contributes to reducing the risk of disease outbreaks and protecting the most vulnerable groups.
It also discussed the responsibilities of the ministries and member entities of the committee, mechanisms to enhance their contribution to supporting the multi-sectoral health response, and the national health emergency response plan.
Bahaibah emphasized that the health sector is one of the most affected sectors by the repercussions of military escalation, due to its direct link to the lives of citizens and its continuous need for medicines, medical supplies, qualified personnel, and the operational capabilities necessary to ensure the continued provision of health services.
He explained that the escalation of military and humanitarian conditions doubles the pressure on health institutions and their workers, amidst limited resources and increasing needs. He stressed the importance of taking possible measures and actions, and not waiting for full capabilities to be available to begin implementing necessary interventions, ensuring the maintenance of a minimum level of readiness in health facilities to continue providing essential services and to mitigate the health and humanitarian consequences of the current situation.
The Minister of Health pointed out that confronting health emergencies is a shared responsibility, requiring each ministry and relevant entity to play its role according to its specializations, and integrating efforts and interventions to enhance the effectiveness of the multi-sectoral response, contributing to overcoming current difficulties and achieving optimal use of available resources and capabilities.
The meeting approved a number of recommendations and assignments aimed at enhancing coordination among concerned parties, activating follow-up mechanisms, and defining responsibilities and priorities, in a way that supports the implementation of required interventions and raises the level of preparedness for responding to health emergencies.
