Mahra Teachers' Comprehensive Strike Halts Studies in Public Schools

On Sunday, educational activities remained paralyzed in public schools across Mahra Governorate, as the comprehensive strike initiated by teachers on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, continued in protest of delayed payment of salaries, incentives, and financial dues.
Schools across the governorate's various districts witnessed a complete halt to the educational process, with students returning home amidst the ongoing strike. The strike followed repeated appeals and demands to the concerned authorities to address the teachers' situation and pay their overdue dues.
Abdullah Thabit, the vice-principal of Hassan School in Mahra, told Al-Mahriah TV that the strike was called to demand the payment of teachers' salaries and incentives. He explained that the action began gradually with a partial strike before escalating to a comprehensive strike that encompassed all schools in the governorate.
He added that this movement represents a general demand of Mahra's teachers, calling for solidarity among educators to ensure the strike's success. He noted that teachers, as educators of generations, have no other means to express their suffering amid the cutoff of their financial entitlements.
The teachers are demanding the full payment of overdue salaries, the regular disbursement of the monthly incentive and its increase to match the rising cost of living, in addition to the payment of rural allowances, job-related adjustments, and bonuses that have been suspended for years.
The teachers affirmed that the strike will continue until their demands are met, calling on the local authority and the government to intervene urgently and implement fundamental solutions that end their suffering and ensure the regular payment of their dues.
Meanwhile, students remain the most affected by the educational halt. Parents are concerned about the continued disruption of the educational process and its impact on academic achievement and the future of the school year, demanding that the relevant authorities intervene quickly to end the crisis and resume studies.
These developments come amid a cumulative crisis in Yemen's education sector, resulting from the deteriorating living conditions of teachers and the delay in their financial entitlements, which poses increasing challenges to the future of the educational process.
