The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned on Thursday of the escalating fighting in Taiz governorate, holding the Houthi group responsible for the military operations in the region and the risks they pose to the civilian population.

In a statement, the UN envoy said he is deeply concerned about the developments in Taiz, noting that the military operations carried out by the Houthi group in the area pose serious risks to civilians.

He added that his office has received very alarming reports of casualties, damage to infrastructure, and road closures, which hinder the ability of residents to leave the area.

He pointed out that Taiz is the third-largest city in Yemen and that the governorate currently hosts the majority of Yemenis recently displaced by fighting in other areas.

He stressed the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, to make every effort to prevent further damage, and to ensure that aid reaches those in need safely and without obstruction.

The UN envoy reiterated his call for the Houthi group to halt its military offensive, clarifying that he is in close contact with the Yemeni government and the Houthi group regarding the necessary steps to urgently contain the situation and ensure the free movement of civilians.
