Axios: US military ordered to prepare for potential attacks on Iran
Axios reported that US President Donald Trump is assessing the timing of potential attacks on Iran, while the military has been ordered to prepare.
The American site, citing "informed sources" on Wednesday, reported that the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) has ordered US Central Command to complete its preparations to continue attacks on Iran.
The orders directed to Central Command did not specify a date for the potential attacks, while the site indicated that Trump is still assessing their timing.
American and Israeli sources stated that the attacks could occur before the US midterm elections scheduled for November 3, and the elections scheduled in Israel on October 27.
The sources indicated that if attacks on Iran continue, wide-scale attacks could be launched on Iran's energy infrastructure and nuclear targets.
A Pentagon official told Anadolu: "Our department's mission is to develop military options and present them to the President (Trump)."
For his part, a White House official told Axios: "The United States is in a strong position regarding control of the Strait of Hormuz, and the Iranian economy is collapsing."
The official added: "Iran has taken a major blow, and things will go either the easy way or the hard way. Trump holds all the power cards and will do what is best for the United States."
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a war on Iran, leaving thousands dead. Tehran responded with attacks on Israel and American sites in the region's countries, before a ceasefire was reached last April.
Subsequently, the United States launched attacks on sites in Iran amid a deadlock in negotiations between the two countries, despite them signing a memorandum of understanding in mid-June.
The negotiation setback comes from disagreements over navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most strategic corridors for global energy and goods supplies.
